Midwest Career Source Vocational School
Midwest Career Source Vocational School, under the leadership of Administrator Dr. Sulbrena Day, is this year’s nomination for LWIA 24’s Business Leadership Award. Under Dr. Day’s leadership, MCS has serviced countless students in obtaining certifications and endorsements for medical positions (CNA, CMA, and a dual CNA/Psychiatric Technician) for the surrounding region’s hospital network (HSHS Healthcare, BJC Healthcare, BRIA Health Services, Carlyle Healthcare, and Gateway Regional Medical Center).
One of the key components that Dr. Day assessed or determined was the difficulties that barrier populations had with test and exam taking. Through her leadership, MCS employed a Certified Psychologist to work with students to ensure that their needs were met, and barriers were bypassed, allowing for almost a 100% completion rate for students coming out of MSC. With their forward thinking of working with workforce systems in the region, MCS has been a leading voice in accreditation for individuals who have not always had the most direct route as well as alleviating pain points for surrounding healthcare systems.
Soon the challenge arose of being able to serve a 44 regional hospital network well with all the staffing demands they had. Once again, her courage and forthright thinking was on display. MCS and Dr. Day were recently awarded a $3 million Apprenticeship Building America Grant through the United States Department of Labor under the Biden Administration. Thus, allowing MCS to meet their challenges of teaching and certifying students to meet the demands of the region. Being trained in Lean Sigma Six, Dr. Day’s leadership at Midwest Career Source put the school and all who they serve in positions to succeed. As nomination of the Business Leadership Award, MCS has had a vast reaching impact on the lives that make up this region.
