Thomas participated in the WIOA Connect to Your Future (CYF) youth program at Workforce Services of Will County. This program offers both high school completion classes and assistance with occupational training and employment. Thomas was able to avail himself of both parts of the program in order to fulfill his career goals.

Thomas entered the CYF high school equivalency/GED program after leaving high school in his sophomore year. He had missed a significant amount of school due to health issues and decided a GED would be the best route for him to attain his high school diploma. He was very focused on becoming a nurse and dedicated himself to passing his GED quickly. This dedication and focus enabled him to complete the actual GED test in slightly over 4 months. Thomas was very excited to transition into the occupation-training portion of CYF.

After his first semester at Joliet Junior College, his CYF career planner enrolled him in the CNA course and Thomas passed with flying colors. Thomas was working in dietary services at Silver Cross Hospital and used his new certifications and networking skills to obtain a position as a CNA in the surgical department. There his contact with nurses more strongly fueled his motivation and desire to advance in his career.

Due to his hard work academically, Thomas was accepted into the highly competitive Registered Nursing program at Joliet Junior College. In May 2020, he earned his RN license and AAS degree in Nursing from Joliet Junior College. He accepted a position at Silver Cross as a Registered Nurse and is earning over $25 per hour, including differential pay for overnight and holiday shifts. Thomas is a true example of someone who utilized his resources, monthly meetings with his career planner, and support to achieve his dream job.
