Leon
Leon had been incarcerated as a youth and sentenced to 23 years at Joliet Correctional Center and other facilities. He was tired of being on what he says, “Felt like a revolving door,” and the results of young immature decisions. After paying his debt to society, Leon visited the Workforce Services office seeking assistance from the WIOA program. His true desire was to obtain a CDL license and full-time employment, but Leon struggled to find a training facility that would accept him with a felony conviction. Leon stated, “I was able to do the job of management but time and time again, was never allowed the position because of my background.”
Finally, Leon found a training facility that would accept him with his past history. He received a scholarship through the WIOA program, received his CDL certificate from Advantage Driver Training, and successfully passed his exam with the Secretary of State to receive his CDL license.
Leon reports that after a brief training period, he was able to secure a local position with A.N. Webber earning $19.50 per hour, which includes a 7% benefits bonus for working 40 hours, 5 days per week.“The WIOA program is an excellent opportunity for someone who has a record to obtain a career instead of just having a job. Because of this opportunity, I not only have a great career, but also the opportunity to purchase a truck and establish my own business,” Leon says. “I have recommended the WIOA program to my nieces and nephews, as well as other family and friends… what a great program,” he exclaims!
