Seth

Seth had been “laid off” from his job at a machine shop in Pekin when he came to the Havana, Illinois, Career Link office seeking training assistance. Although Seth had years of experience as a team leader, extensive “hands-on” knowledge of manufacturing, mechanics, and basic electronics, he needed the proper credentials to find another job that would allow him to provide for his family. As a result, Seth decided to work toward earning an Associate’s degree in Applied Science.

Seth quickly realized that being a provider was a serious challenge when returning to school. His unemployment ran out midway through his degree program, resulting in Seth having to work full-time while in school. When Seth developed congestive heart failure following a respiratory illness in the last semester of his schooling, he managed to find the strength to take his final before going to the emergency room for treatment.

Seth is currently looking for a job that will utilize his new degree, while maintaining his current position. He has completed the electronics exam for Caterpillar and will soon be attending a job interview. Seth says, “Being able to care for my family, to make enough money, and to have more options as an employee were all prime motivators for me to complete my degree.”
