Dominique
Dominique Jones came to First Institute Training and Management (FITM), the Youth provider for Local Workforce Area 18, in December of 2017 seeking to obtain her High School Equivalency. After her initial assessment, she knew she had a long road ahead to reach her goal, but demonstrated a determined attitude to succeed. She was enrolled in Adult Education classes at Danville Area Community College, and also received support from FITM to assist her in achieving her educational and employment goals.
While participating in the program, Dominique was focused on earning her high school equivalency, but life chose to throw some barriers in the way. In January of 2018, Dominique suffered the loss of her fiancé due to a tragic car accident. Later, tragedy would strike again as she lost her brother to gun violence.
After taking time for grieving, Dominique focused on getting back in class while working different jobs to support herself. Later in 2019, she nearly became homeless and was working with FITM and the Housing Authority of the City of Danville (HACD) to maintain a stable living situation. In early 2020, Dominique became pregnant and was ordered on bed rest so she was once again unable to attend classes. During this time, FITM continued to support Dominique with tutoring, mentoring her as a new parent, financial literacy classes, and valuable moral support to keep her going. After the birth of her daughter, she was able to return to normal activities, and FITM provided support with work experience, transportation assistance, and paying for her GED testing.
It was a long road, but Dominique’s determination and support from FITM paid off. On May 19, 2022, Dominique walked the stage with her daughter to receive her High School Equivalency and currently has two jobs; one at Help at Home as a home health aide, and another at Menards as a Shift Manager. Her resilience and dedication as a participant stands as a testament to her spirit and the will to succeed.
