Steven

LWIA 24 staff brief every Transition Assistance Program (TAP) class at Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, Illinois. All transitioning military personnel must attend a TAP class. Shortly after his TAP briefing, Steven visited the St. Clair County Intergovernmental Grants Department to discuss strategies and learn more about opportunities available throughout the region, as well as ways Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) programs could assist in his transition. Steven had applied for several employment positions, but had received very little response.

Following his visit with LWIA 24, Steven applied for a purchasing position with Servco, located in St. Louis, Missouri. Servco builds commercial and institutional foodservice facilities. Knowing that many of his skills from the military would benefit Servco, Steven presented the On-the-Job Training (OJT) program during his interview. Servco After speaking with LWIA 24 staff for clarification on the OJT program, Servco hired Steven for the position. The company was thrilled with his job performance and how quickly he was progressing. During the transition period, Steven had some financial issues with finishing his degree. Because he was leaving the military mid-semester, the tuition assistance program would not cover the costs of that semester. In addition, Steven would not receive his GI benefits in time to help. LWIA 24 staff was able to assist with bridging that gap to help Steven complete his Business Degree.

Steven is very appreciative of the assistance he received, “Transitioning back into civilian life after the military can be a challenge. I often felt overwhelmed by the decisions I was faced with, and unsure about my future in the months leading to my separation. You took the time to sit down and meet with me to discuss my education and career plans. That was a huge help. You and your team took it one step further and set me up with a great career in the local area, and offered me education benefits to help me continue my education. Thank you for making an otherwise stressful situation easy. I am well on my way to success, thanks in no small part to your efforts!”
